The city of Prayagraj holds a venerated position in Indian history; from its first mention in the ancient holy Hindu scriptures called the Vedas, to being the witness of India’s freedom, the mere mention of the city invokes an array of memories that it has been associated with over centuries. The seventh largest city in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and with a population of over 1.5 million, Prayagraj has many names, from Prayaga to Kosambi to Allahabad. Today, it is best known for its enduring significance in Hindu culture, with the most noteworthy characteristics being its proximity to the Triveni Sangam, or the confluence of the three holy rivers of Yamuna, Ganga and Sarasvati, and the major pilgrimage of the Kumbh Mela.
